Richard Galbraith Cartoon Workshops

Primary Schools Program

Richard works in primary schools across Victoria, conducting cartoon workshops and storytelling.

Cartoon Workshops - Grade 1 to 6
The cartoon workshops are hands-on and interactive. They aim to give students the tools and confidence to overcome the "I can't draw" hurdle and have fun, no matter what their ability.

The students learn simple cartooning techniques by drawing characters with a range of moods and expressions. They also learn how to create their own characters, by starting off with simple shapes and building the cartoon step by step. We cover shapes, character creation, expression, speech bubbles and action.

Storytelling - Prep
Richard combines storytelling with illustrations drawn on the spot. The students help out with actions and sounds. In third and fourth term, the Preps can have a go at drawing cartoons as well as having a story.

Cartoon Workshops - How many students, and what do they need to bring?
Each session can have either one or two grades. As a rule of thumb, four sessions with two classes per session can cater for up to eight classes, or around 220 students. Five sessions can cater for up to ten classes, or around 280 students.

If you've got 400 students at school, we'd need 8 sessions over 2 days, and so on.

Each student needs at least 3 sheets of A4 paper, a pencil or pen and a firm surface to work on. Students can work on the floor, allowing the use of the library or a multi-purpose room.

If there's a spare session in the day after everyone has had a go, we sometimes present an additional session for those students who are particulary keen or could just benefit from a bit more cartooning. It's often a great confidence booster for kids who may struggle in other areas.

Costs
Richard presents four sessions per day and each session is one hour long. The cost is $475. If you need five sessions in the day the cost is $530.

Storytelling - Prep
Richard tells a story, draws the illustrations and gets the Preps to help out with sound effects. The students do not need to bring any special equipment except their voices. If the visit is in third or fourth term, the Preps will also have a go at drawing some cartoons. So they'll need 2 or 3 sheets of A4 paper, a pencil and something to rest their work on.

Session Numbers
We've included a table to help you work out how many sessions you might need. We're flexible about numbers, and will work with you to fit everyone into a cost effective program. If you've got any further questions, please send an email to schools@dustydog.com.au and we'll get back to you.
